CHOCTAW, Miss. (May 27, 2013) –As part of Pearl River Resort’s health and wellness initiatives, many steps have been taken to assist and provide a healthy lifestyle for the Resort’s workforce of 3,000. Healthier meal options have been introduced in the Associate Dining Room (ADR) and a new insurance plan that enables access to more comprehensive benefits was implemented. And now, the resort has introduced the Biggest Loser Challenge. Nearly 500 associates signed up to participate in this exciting challenge and 1,800 pounds was lost in the first week alone!

The Biggest Loser Challenge is a twelve-week weight loss competition that encourages associates to lose weight and improve their health. The contest began on Friday, May 3rd and will end on July 26th. Associates are competing in team or individual categories and have a chance to win a share of $5,000. To be successful in the challenge, associates can simply eat healthier food options and exercise, weigh in each week, and the team or individual with the highest percentage of weight loss after twelve weeks will win the challenge.

“The results from the first week’s weigh-in were phenomenal. This challenge is not only helping many of us to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle but it is also a great teambuilding initiative,” stated Holly Gagnon, President & CEO of Pearl River Resort. “Our goal is to lose 5 tons and we’ve already lost almost a ton. I couldn’t be happier and this is only the beginning. We’re going to keep going and I am confident we will exceed our goals.”

A huge majority of the Biggest Loser competitors signed up at the Associate Health Fair held at the resort on May 2nd. Over 800 associates attended this event and received valuable information, onsite classes, and free health screenings provided by: Blue Cross Blue Shield, Family Fitness, Rush Wellness Workforce and Choctaw Health Center.

Pearl River Resort has been continually educating its associates on health-related issues, specifically highlighting the effects of diabetes. Diabetes is the number one health problem for Native Americans across the U.S, and the Associate Health Fair was a great preventive service for its associates, which includes Choctaw Indian tribal members.

A total of 399 associates participated in the health screenings at the Associate Health Fair. “Some employees had elevated blood pressure, cholesterol or blood sugar and quite a few were at high risk of heart disease and diabetes. It’s going be great to follow up and see how dieting and exercising has positively impacted their results,” stated Lindsey Butler, R.N, Occupational Health Nurse for Rush Workforce Wellness. The Biggest Loser Challenge will be a great way to help lower these health risks and ease any current health issues.
